Recalibration procedure in the KERN calibration laboratory
Step 1 - Initial inspection
Once your delivery arrives at our laboratory, the goods are first unpacked and checked. We verify that the delivery is complete and compare the accompanying documents with the delivery. The accompanying documents are then entered into our system and a brief functional test (for balances and measuring devices) is carried out. The order data is then recorded and the calibration items are forwarded directly to the responsible laboratory.
Step 2 - Acquisition of calibration items
The responsible laboratory now records the individual calibration items in detail. In the case of weights, a further visual inspection is carried out and any abnormalities (e.g. heavy signs of wear) are documented.
Step 3 - Preparation of the calibration
Before calibration, acclimatisation is carried out where required, and then proceed as follows:
Balances
A new functional test is carried out.
Force gauges / Other measuring devices
A new functional test is carried out and, in the case of third-party devices, a test of their compatibility with our calibration equipment. If any abnormalities occur or functions are impaired that prevent calibration, proceed to Step 3b. Otherwise, continue with Step 4.
Weights
After acclimatisation, the weights are now lightly cleaned using a dust-free cloth or air. If any abnormalities or uncertainties arise that prevent calibration, proceed to Step 3b. Otherwise, continue with Step 4.
Step 3b - Überprüfung und ggf. Behebung von Auffälligkeiten / Defekten
Balances / Kraftmessgeräte / Other measuring devices
If a balance shows any abnormalities or does not function correctly, it will be forwarded to our service department, depending on the manufacturer. The service department will then check the balance and send you a cost estimate for repair or replacement. If you give your approval, the device will be repaired/replaced and forwarded back to the calibration laboratory. There, we will proceed to step 4. If you do not agree to the repair/replacement, we will proceed to step 5.
Weights
If there is any uncertainty regarding weights (e.g. no clear accuracy class, unclear markings, etc.), the laboratory will consult with our testing service sales department. They will contact you to clarify any open questions so that you can proceed to Step 4.
Step 4 - Performance of the calibration
The calibration is now performed and a calibration certificate is issued. Step 5 is then carried out.
Weights
If calibration reveals that weights are outside the tolerance range, our testing service sales department will contact you with details of the weights concerned and the expected additional costs. Once we have received your response, step 4b will be carried out and an updated order confirmation will be sent to you.
Step 4b - Carrying out any necessary reworking of weights and second calibration
Depending on the weight, reworking is now carried out in the form of adjustment or replacement. Replacement is always carried out if adjustment is not possible or if replacement is more cost-effective than adjustment. Depending on the weight, adjustment can be carried out using an adjustment chamber, polishing or material removal.
Once all weights have been reworked, a second calibration of the weights concerned is carried out and the values documented. Unless otherwise requested, you will receive both values in the calibration certificate.
Step 5 - Packaging and shipping of calibration items
Once calibration has been completed, the calibration items are securely repackaged and returned to you together with the calibration certificate(s).
